Advanced English Placement

AEP is an Advanced English Placement class that prepares students for passing academic language tests that assess English proficiency in non-native speakers. It is for students who want to achieve academic success and communicate effectively in English. AEP achieves this by using material from past TOEFL, SAT, and IELTS exams as the core material for study.

Most people take these tests to gain admission to universities where instruction is in English. Additionally, many employers and government agencies may use these scores to determine an applicant’s English ability. It is not meant to test academic knowledge, however when a candidate demonstrates a mature vocabulary and is confident in expressing themselves easily, then it is this that may be the moment of success for your son or daughter. We are not always judged on our academic prowess, but invariably we are judged on our ability to express ourselves.

One cannot underestimate the value of this course. Below are just some of the topics covered while studying AEP.

Vocabulary: Using an online interactive website students learn more than 10 new SAT words each week.

While studying the Speaking section here are just a few of the skills the students practice;

  • Stating a problem or situation
  • Suggesting solutions
  • Giving opinions about solutions and giving reasons and examples to support solutions
  • Summarizing main points of a lecture
  • Organizing flow/making clear statements on given topics using concrete examples
  • Using transitions to help flow of speech and useful phrases for expressing problems and presenting solutions
  • Stating opinion and giving reasons and additional information

While studying the Writing section (Grades 9, 10 and 11 focus on this skill) here are just a few of the skills the students practice;

  • Understanding the original text accurately
  • Using their own words to convey essential information and ideas from given reading & listening
  • Compare and contrast and cause and effect
  • Citing information, citing sources, supporting points and giving examples, organizing information from various sources
  • Describing personal experience
  • Expressing an opinion on an issue and supporting it with concrete examples and details/organizing ideas in an effective way.

While studying the Reading section (Grade 8 focuses on this skill) here are just a few of the skills the students practice;

  • Identifying important information and facts stated in the passage/locating a specific piece of information in a passage quickly
  • Understanding the distinction between main ideas and supporting details/focusing on facts, definitions, or other information presented in a passage
  • Perceiving ideas that are suggested but not directly stated within a passage
  • drawing conclusions based on information given within a statement or section of a passage
  • Determining implications of the author’s words.

 While studying the Listening section (Grade 7 focuses on this skill) here are just a few of the skills the students practice;

  • Taking note of major points and important details of a lecture or conversation
  • Listening for signal expressions that identify details
  • Understanding the speaker’s general feeling about what is discussed
  • Recognizing words or phrases that indicate the speaker’s feeling or opinion
  • Recognizing tone of voice, intonation, and sentence stress that speaker uses to show his or her feeling or opinion.

To do this students are encouraged to use sketch-noting.


Throughout the course the students will regularly have the opportunity to experience genuine past papers. This provides them with real life experience of authentic exams, and also provides them with the skills and confidence they will need to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
